Baranowski’s book arrives!

Colleague Maciej Baranowski’s book , ” Phonological Variation and Change in the Dialect of Charleston, South Carolina”, is now available in the library. There’s only one copy, but for those of you who can’t wait to see what’s inside, Duke University Press have put out a teaser with the table of contents and a foreword by William Labov.  Check it out here.

13th International Conference on Methods in Dialectology

German department colleague Guido Seiler is co-organizer of the 13th International Conference on Methods in Dialectology, taking place 4-8 August in Leeds.  Invited speakers include David Britain, William Labov, Anthony Lodge, and Sali Tagliamonte.  Check out all the details here.

Grammar and Space symposium

Colleague Nigel Vincent is the local organizer for a Philological Society symposium on Grammar and Space to be held here in Manchester on 7 November. Further details below (and in the attached document), courtesy of Paul Rowlett via the LAGB mailing list.

Dear LAGB subscribers,

The Philological Society is organising a symposium on the topic of grammar
and space, to be held from 12noon on Fri 7 Nov 08 at the University of
Manchester. The event is free of charge to PhilSoc members (and even
includes lunch!). Speakers include Steve Levinson and Regine Eckardt.
PhilSoc are also offering financial support for student associate members
who wish to attend. Details in the attached flyer.

Bermúdez-Otero promoted!

Manchet has just received word that colleague Ricardo Bermúdez-Otero has quite deservedly been promoted to Senior Lecturer (the UK equivalent of Associate Professor in other systems).  Well done, Ricardo!
