The linguists, free (and legal) on the web

April 30, 2009

For, Manchet gathers, a limited time, the film “The linguists”, starring among others former colleague, and Bolton (linguistic) wanderer, Greg Anderson, is freely watchable (legally!) here.  (Sharp Mancunian sensitive eyes will notice Greg’s hat-tip to his former home in his sporting of a Man United jersey around half-way through the film.)

Revealed: Manchet uncovers missing sandwidges

April 27, 2009

It seems that tomorrow’s canceled (language) sandwidges have found their way to the 4pm seminar.  Tomorrow’s seminar speaker is Ulrike Zeshan (UCLan) on “Linguistic and cultural diversity in sign languages and deaf communities around the world.”  The talk will be followed by wine and sandwiches (since Zeshan’s schedule doesn’t have time for dinner).

Seiler wins UBS award for Habilitation

April 27, 2009

Germand department colleague Guido Seiler, it seems, has been awarded with the UBS prize for his Habilitation at the University of Zurich, at least if Babelfish’s translation of this, as follows, is to be trusted (German not being found among the set of languages in Manchet’s linguistic repertoire):

The linguist PD Dr. Guido Seiler was distinguished with the UBS Habilitationspreis.

Assuming the announcement means something approaching the above, then congratulations, Guido!
