Colleague Andrew Koontz-Garboden recently received word that his British Academy Small Grant, entitled “Modality and existentiality in Ulwa” has been funded. The grant provides for three trips to Karawala, Nicaragua over the next year and a half to carry documentation of modal and existential constructions in Ulwa. The work is the starting point for a larger joint-project with Itamar Francez (Yale University) that seeks to better understand the morphology and semantics of modal and existential constructions crosslinguistically.
