Penguin Press has acquired UK and Commonwealth rights to non-fiction title The Romani Gypsies by Yaron Matras.

Editorial director Helen Conford bought the rights in a pre-emptive deal with Caroline Dawnay at United Agents.

Matras is a professor of linguistics at Manchester University and researchers in Romani studies. The book aims to give a portrait of the Romanies, based on his research on their history, culture, language and social organisation.

Conford said: “Matras addresses his subject with rigour and empathy, born out of his personal experiences working with Romanies and his twenty years of academic research. The resulting book will enlighten readers about one of the most closed and wide-ranging communities in the world.”

Allen Lane will publish in 2013.

Congrats, Yaron!
