Strycharczuk doctored

Manchet is proud to report that indefatigable young phonologist Patrycja Strycharczuk passed her PhD viva on Wednesday afternoon. The viva was a high-powered affair in which external examiner Gerard Docherty (Newcastle upon Tyne) was joined via videolink by Andrew Wedel (Arizona), both under the expert chairing of colleague Martina Faller. Silently observing the proceedings were Pat’s cosupervisors, Ricardo Bermúdez-Otero and Yuni Kim, fellow postgrad Danielle Turton, and Prof Wedel’s cat. Patrycja’s weighty thesis was approved with no corrections, whereupon the company adjourned to Ricardo’s room for refreshments of the bubbly sort. (Sadly, the champagne could not be videolinked to Tucson.)

Faithful Manchet readers will recall that Pat featured on our pages only a few weeks ago following the publication of an article in Journal of Phonetics.

Congratulations, Pat!
