Gilbert takes the trophy

Manchester’s Richard Gilbert, linguistics undergraduate and captain of our University Challenge team, received the University Challenge champions’ trophy from Lord Rees on TV this Monday – after a stunning performance that saw them turn the tables on University College London.

UCL had never looked threatened throughout the competition, storming through the early rounds without breaking a sweat (and beating Manchester in the quarter finals, in the process). This match, however, was a different kettle of fish. Manchester started off in fantastic form, leaving a stunned UCL on the starting line for some time. And though UCL staged a comeback in the last ten minutes of the show, it was not enough to bring them within reach of Manchester’s score, and they finally succumbed 190-140.

Manchester’s victory means that they retain, as defending champions, the trophy won by last year’s team. It’s the university’s fourth victory in eight years, equalling a record set by Magdalen College, Oxford.

Manchet congratulates Barr, Brice, Brown and of course our very own Richard Gilbert!

UPDATE: Gilbert appeared on BBC Breakfast on 2nd May. Here’s a picture to prove it:
