MigRom policy briefing released

Posted on July 1, 2014 by

The MigRom project, led by Professor Yaron Matras, has released its first policy briefing.

An international project with partners across Europe, MigRom aims to investigate the experiences, motivations, and ambitions of Roma migrants from Romania who have recently moved to Italy, France, Spain, and the UK, and the effect of migration on their own lives and on the lives of relations left behind in the home communities in Romania. It also investigates popular, media, and official reactions to Roma immigration. The project is funded by an ERC grant, 2013-2017.

In the first project year, a Pilot Survey was carried out among communities of Roma migrants in western Europe, and in their origin communities in Romania. You can read the full reports on the pilot survey here.

The briefing emphasizes the need to offer permanent housing and services to Roma migrants. Efforts are also needed to counteract negative images and misrepresentation. Local institutions should also contribute to capacity building and self-reliance within the Roma community by offering training and support to young leadership.

More briefings will be forthcoming as the project continues. Follow Manchet to find out when a new one is available!
