At the University of Manchester, points mean prizes. And LEL’s undergrads have raked in a fantastic haul of prizes at departmental and School level this year! Here are the prizes awarded by the Department:

Stella Brook Prize (awarded to first-year student(s) on performance in core English language papers; £50)

  • Lucy Giannasi (BA Hons English Language)
  • Martha Tomlinson (BA Hons Linguistics)

Thomas Maguire Prize (awarded to second-year student(s) on performance in papers on history of the English language; £100)

  • Joseph Hargreaves (BA Hons English Language)
  • Yaorui Chen (BA Hons English Language)

G. L. Brook Prize (awarded to a final-year student specialising in English Language; £100)

  • Yiyi Zhang (BA Hons English Language)

Yiyi deserves particular congratulations, as she was awarded a SALC Outstanding Academic Achievement Award as one of the School’s highest-performing students, netting her £1000. Manchet advises her not to spend it all at once.

Another five students – Xiaoxin Ou (BA Hons English Language), Jenny Toner (BA Hons English Language), Qiang Xu (BA Hons Linguistics & Social Anthropology), Yichen Xu (BA Hons English Language), and Wenqian Zhang (BA Hons Linguistics & Sociology) – were all awarded the Dean’s Award for this academic year in recognition of their high performance. This certificate is handed out at graduation along with £250 each.

Congratulations to all winners!
