Julia at IfR7

LEL PhD student and President’s Scholar Julia Kolkmann will be giving a paper at IfR7 in Warsaw this September, entitled “English pre-nominal possessives as an instance of default interpretations: a pragmatic re-analysis”.

Based on an online study involving native speakers of English, the paper discusses the availability of out-of-context interpretations for English possessive phrases, arguing against their theoretical status as neo-Gricean implicatures and re-analysing them as instances of pragmatic defaults, broadly conceived as a mixture of salience, socio-cultural entrenchment and probabilistic tendencies of the kinds of relations possessor and possessee nouns tend to enter into.

Manchet wishes her an enjoyable and productive trip to Poland!
