Saussure inside and outside linguistics

On 24th Feb, Mont Follick Professor Emeritus Nigel Vincent will lead a special CIDRAL Theory Intensive session on Ferdinand de Saussure Inside and Outside Linguistics, in Samuel Alexander A112. All are welcome!

The event details can be found here. From the blurb:

Ferdinand de Saussure (1857-1913) is commonly described as one of the founders of structuralism based on the ideas contained in the book Cours de linguistique structurale which bears his name though it was in fact written by his students and published posthumously in 1916. In this class we will look at three things:

  • the way those ideas have been taken up and developed or challenged within linguistics
  • the wider discussion and development of these ideas within the humanities and social science disciplines
  • the relation between the Cours and Saussure’s other writings, many of which remained unpublished in his lifetime
