Welcome to Andrea, Lauren and Pat!

It’s a new academic year and our division sees three new faces to go with it: Andrea Nini, Lauren Fonteyn, and Patrycja Strycharczuk.

Dr Andrea Nini comes to us from Aston University, where he held a postdoctoral position at the Centre for Forensic Linguistics. His research specialism is quantitative sociolinguistics and dialectology, as well as the application of this knowledge in the forensic domain. Within forensic linguistics he focuses on authorship profiling: the task of identifying features of an anonymous author based on their linguistic output. If you’re a student taking his classes, don’t plagiarize. He’ll know.

Dr Lauren Fonteyn has just finished a PhD at the University of Leuven, on the history of nominal and verbal gerunds in English, including both their syntactic properties and their discourse functions. She’s a historical corpus linguist with a functional-cognitive theoretical slant.

Dr Patrycja Strycharczuk will be familiar to long-time Manchet readers: she’s a former student here, specializing in phonetics and its relation to phonology, and got her PhD in 2012. She returns to Manchester after a British Academy postdoc at QMU in Edinburgh working with James Scobbie.

Manchet welcomes these exciting new colleagues, and looks forward to watching them discover the joys of LEL staffdom!
