Durrell and Whitt in PBB

A new paper by emeritus prof Martin Durrell and former Manchester postdoc Jason Whitt has appeared in Beiträge zur Geschichte der deutschen Sprache und Literatur (PBB)!

The article deals with the development of the würde + infinitive construction in Early Modern German (1650–1800), and you can read it here. Durrell and Whitt show that the würde + infinitive construction gradually encroaches on the domain of the preterite subjunctive during this period, and also discuss its reception among contemporary prescriptive grammarians.

This work stems from the GerManC project, a joint AHRC/ESRC-funded effort to create a corpus of Early Modern German. The corpus is now freely available via the Oxford Text Archive, among other places.

Congratulations to Martin and Jason for this top journal publication!
