Ricardo Bermúdez-Otero at MIT (and more)!

Some quite impressive news coming from LEL:  this Easter Ricardo Bermúdez-Otero will be giving two invited talks. This week he is a guest of the MIT Linguistics Department, where on Friday 7 April he’ll be giving a talk within the MIT Colloquium series under the title ‘The phonological lexicon, usage factors, and rates of change: Evidence from Manchester English’. This paper presents work carried out together with Manchester PhD student George Bailey, Manchester colleague Maciej Baranowski, and Manchester PhD alumna Danielle Turton. The abstract for the talk is available on Whamit!

Ricardo will make his next stop at Edinburgh, where on Thursday 20 April he’ll be delivering the opening talk at the 4th Workshop on Sound Change under the title ‘Individual differences and the explanation of sound change’. The abstract is available here. As Manchet readers will notice, Ricardo’s argument draws crucially on the findings of Maciej’s sociolinguistic research (e.g. here) and on award-winning work by Manchester PhD student Henri Kauhanen.
