Jean-Marc Dewaele @ LEL Research Seminar

Next Tuesday (Feb 6, 2018) LEL welcomes Jean-Marc Dewaele, Professor of Applied Linguistics at the University of London Birkbeck). Dewaele’s research talk will focus on the language of emotion and foreign language acquisition. Here’s the abstract:

Abstract
In this lecture I will present an overview of the recent surge of interest in the field of emotion and foreign language (FL) acquisition, after many years of neglect (Dörnyei & Ryan, 2015). My main argument is that we should not focus too much on negative emotions but that we should include the positive emotions that propel the FL learners forward. I will present the main findings of a large-scale study on individual differences in learners’ Foreign Language Enjoyment (FLE) and Foreign Language Anxiety (FLA) in the FL classroom (Dewaele & MacIntyre, 2014, 2016). Finally, I will present a number of recent studies showing that levels of FLE and FLCA are linked to personality traits and to a complex interaction of learner-internal variables as well as variables linked to the teacher and teaching practices (Dewaele et al, 2017). I will finally present some pedagogical implications of these findings.
