LEL Historical Linguists invited talks

Two of our historical linguists, Kersti Börjars and Lauren Fonteyn, headed out of Manchester to give an invited talk on some aspect of their research.

On Tuesday, 12 June, Lauren headed over to the University of York to present at their Linguistics colloquium. Lauren’s talk was called ‘The principle of no synonymy in language change: the facts and the fiction’, and the abstract can be found here.

Closely following that, Professor Kersti Börjars went to Tartu (Estonia) to give a plenary address at Svenska språkets historia 15 (‘the 15the conference on the history of the Swedish Language). Kersti gave her talk on Swedish noun phrases, fittingly in Swedish (‘Tidiga svenska nominalfraser i germanskt perspektiv’). You can find the abstract, again in Swedish, here.

Funny anecdote: on the featured image, you see the flags that have been put outside the main building of the University of Tartu in honour of the conference om svenska språkets historia. There’s a Swedish flag (for obvious reasons), a Finnish flag, an Estonian flag, and, finally, especially for Kersti, a UK flag!
