This term has brought us two successful PhD vivas in phonology and phonetics.

Deepthi Gopal passed her viva on 29th Novemeber, defending a dissertation on “Similarity and representations in sonorant phonology”. Deepthi’s supervisors were Yuni Kim (now at Essex) and Ricardo Bermúdez-Otero, whereas the examiners were Wendell Kimper (internal) and Marc van Oostendorp (Meertens Instituut/Nijmegen). Deepthi is currently in Cambridge, working as a research associate on the project ‘Investigating the diffusion of morphosyntactic innovations using social media’.

George Bailey‘s dissertation was on ‘Variation and change in Northern Englishes velar nasals: Production and perception’, and the work was supervised by Maciej Baranowski and Ricardo Bermúdez-Otero, and previously also by Laurel MacKenzie (now at NYU). The successful viva took place on 14th December. The examiners were Patrycja Strycharczuk (internal) and Jane Stuart-Smith (Glasgow). The commemorative photo is featured below (the Manchet paparazzi were not allowed in Deepthi’s viva). George is currently a Lecturer in Phonetics and Phonology at York.

Manchet congratulates! Please don’t forget to send us your graduation photos!
