Manchet has admittedly let slip in reporting the conference pursuits of the LEL phon/phon postgrads, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t been keeping busy.

The recent Fonologi i Norden (FiNo) workshop in Edinburgh saw a good Manchester representation. Donald Morrison presented a talk on ‘Metrical structure in Scottish Gaelic: Tonal accent, glottalization and overlength’, whereas Stephen Nichols gave a poster on ‘Vowel-pair frequencies and phonotactic restrictions in Lozi’. In addition, two LEL alumnae, Deepthi Gopal (now at Cambridge) and Míša Hejná (now at Aarhus) gave a poster, in collaboration with Pavel Šturm on ‘The rhotic in Jutland Danish’.

Following his trip up North, Stephen Nichols ventured south, to present his Lozi research at the Philological Society Early Career Researcher Forum, hosted by  Wolfson College, Oxford. LEL’s David Denison was also in attendance, chairing a session on the history of English.
