Postcard from Pat

Posted on August 5, 2019 by

Pat is down under, attending the International Congress of Phonetic Sciences 2019, the quadrennial phonetics fest bringing together more or less everyone who dabbles in sounds. She’s there carrying the torch for Northern Englishes, with a presentation on the variation in the STRUT vowel in the North of England, and its mysterious relationship to house moves (full story here). In addition to this, she’s a co-author on a paper by Koen Sebregts on voicing in Dutch, and a paper by Amanda Cole on the PRICE-MOUTH cross-over in Cockney. It’s a full schedule, but not so full that one couldn’t have some koality time with local wildlife.
