Postcard from Vera

It seems that the Southern Hemisphere is the preferred destination for Manchester linguists this summer. Vera is the latest colleague to venture there, and here’s what she says:

Talofa mai Samoa! I’m lucky to spend almost another four weeks in Samoa, on the island of Upolu, to learn more about the land, the culture and, of course, the Samoan language.
Pictured is one of the landmarks of the Samoan capital of Apia. The clock tower has just been painted red, but is famous for getting a fresh layer of paint frequently- it was blue just last week. It chimes the same tune than no other than London’s Big Ben clock tower.
