Strycharczuk in Indiana

Pat is currently in Bloomington Indiana, visiting Indiana University. The Department of Linguistics at IU has close links with Manchester LEL. Most importantly, they gave us Andrew Koontz-Garboden, who graduated from Indiana in 2001. More recently, they hosted Ricardo in 2017, and PhD student, Stefano Coretta, went to visit in 2018.

Indiana is a home to an outstanding Phonetics Lab that has pioneered the use of 3D ultrasound in speech research. That sort of thing would have a magnetic effect on Pat, and she has indeed enjoyed geeking out with the machine, as evidenced in the featured photo (that’s a 3D mesh model of Pat’s tongue producing the elusive Polish y consonant, should you wonder). The main goal, however, is collaborating on a project on Polish vowel reduction, jointly with Dr Malgosia Cavar. Other perks of visiting Indiana include finally being on the same email schedule as Ricardo. If that was not enough to make you jealous, here’s what Autumn looks like in the Midwest.
