
PhD student, Stefano Coretta, has just had his first article published. His paper ‘An exploratory study of voicing-related differences in vowel duration as compensatory temporal adjustment in Italian and Polish’ is out in Glossa. The scholarship is as profound as the title is long. Stefano’s crucial finding is the presence of an invariant temporal interval amidst bewildering temporal speech variation. This potentially explains a well-known, but poorly understood cross-linguistic tendencies in vowel duration, as conditioned by the voicing of the following stop.
