Nini on Victoria Derbyshire programme

LEL’s Andrea Nini appeared on Victoria Derbyshire programme today to comment on the Ayia Napa case. The case concerns a British teenager convicted in Cyprus for public mischief after she retracted previous allegations of rape against 12 Israeli men. The defence argued that the retraction note had been written under duress and, in fact, dictated by the police.  In November, Andrea gave evidence in court, supporting this explanation. His expert report shows that several expressions in the note are unidiomatic, and are unlikely to have been written by a native speaker of English. This opinion is confirmed by evidence from spoken English corpora. However, the judge has dismissed this evidence. The teenager has been convicted and is currently awaiting sentence. The handling of the case by the police and by the justice system has sparked multiple protests, with calls for tourism boycott of Cyprus.
