Manchet is delighted to announce that the Manchester Forum in Linguistics aka mFiL is taking place this week, having returned from the web to Manchester, where it rightfully belongs. The conference, currently in its ninth edition, is an annual meeting of postgraduate students and early career researchers.

This year’s organising team are

  • Alina McLellan (lead organiser)
  • Elizabeth Tobyn (communications co-ordinator)
  • Michael Cameron (treasurer)
  • Núria Barrios-Jurado (website & social media co-ordinator)
  • Paul Stott (submissions co-ordinator)

They have put together a very exciting programme, including plenary talks from early career researchers, as is the mFiL tradition. Plenaries will be given by Hannah Booth, Julian Grove, Paolo Lorusso and Sadie Ryan. The invitees will also participate in a careers panel, advising on navigating the job market post graduation.

Manchet readers will recognise Hannah Booth‘s name, an LEL alumna, currently working as a postdoctoral fellow in Ghent. Hannah will speak on “The diversity of expletives: theoretical possibilities and diachronic opportunities”.

Other LEL contributions on this year’s mFiL programme include talks by Mary Chioti on “Folkloristic Accent Meta-Attitudes” and by Paul Stott on “Extraposed Subject Relatives and VP Internal Subjects”.
